The world’s only trillionaire just outspent everyone. Since July, Elon Musk has quietly moved $276 million into the American midterm election machinery, according to figures first revealed by The New York Times and confirmed by Andrew Romeo, spokesperson for Musk’s super PAC. This is not a trickle. It is a flood. The money is designed to prop up a Republican Party that is currently bleeding support in polls due to soaring inflation and the unpopular Iran war.
The biggest chunk—$158 million—went to the Senate Leadership Fund. That single check stands as one of the largest known political donations in US history. Another $76 million landed in America PAC, Musk’s own vehicle, which is currently deploying a 2024-scale ground game. They are knocking on doors. They are calling voters. It’s a logistical beast operating in the background while the public debates policy.
Musk also targeted a specific wound: the Texas Senate race. He sent $10 million to Lone Star Liberty PAC to back Ken Paxton. Texas is a red state, but the GOP is nervous about holding it. Musk’s intervention signals he sees this race as existential for his political allies. It is a dramatic U-turn. Just last May, he told reporters, “I think I’ve done enough.” He clearly changed his mind.
The contrast with 2024 is stark. Back then, Musk was on stage, flanking Donald Trump, leading the DOGE department. Now he is a shadow in the backroom, writing checks while keeping a lower public profile. The two men feuded when Musk left his government post. They have since patched things up. Trump even handed Musk the National Medal of Science last week. The alliance is fragile, but the money flows.
Democrats are furious. Lauren French, spokesperson for Senate Majority PAC, accused the GOP of trying to “outrun their unpopular candidates.” She argued that the cash is a mask for a failing economy. But the math is simple. With $276 million in the bank, Republicans can buy more airtime than Democrats can match. The next federal filing deadline is this week. Expect the numbers to keep climbing.
