Built in 1922, the Orpheum Theatre was the first atmospheric cinema in the United States, designed to feel like a star‑lit Andalusian garden.
The 15‑month closure that began in December 2024 allowed a $13 million overhaul, restoring original plaster moldings, chartreuse trim, star lights, and a hand‑painted fire curtain.
But the project wasn’t only about nostalgia; new accessible seating, a climate‑controlled balcony, and portable concessions were installed to meet modern standards.
Funding came from private donors and historic tax credits, and a portion was earmarked to create the theatre’s first endowment for future maintenance.
The grand reopening on May 28, 2026 featured a performance by Grammy‑winning artist John Legend, signaling the venue’s return to Wichita’s cultural scene.
The theatre will now launch a regular schedule of shows, with the first full‑season program slated to begin next month, bolstered by the new endowment.
