Harmanpreet Kaur announced her resignation as captain of the India women’s cricket teams across all formats, citing a desire to focus on playing and to give space for the next generation.
The 35‑year‑old, who took over the T20I side in 2018 and added ODI leadership in 2022, guided India to its first senior ICC World Cup title in 2022 and a staggering four Asia Cup crowns in 2012, 2016, 2022 and 2026.
Under her stewardship, the team claimed gold at the Asian Games in Hangzhou (2022) and Aichi‑Nagoya (2026), won the historic Test victory against Australia in 2023, and secured the first bilateral ODI series win in England since 1999.
Kaur also became the first cricketer to captain a side in over 150 T20I matches, surpassing legends like MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma, and led India to a 270‑run triumph over England in the first women’s Test at Lord’s.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, she reflected on the sacrifices, the highs, and the personal cost of leading a team that has grown into a force to be reckoned with worldwide.
With her resignation, India will now look to appoint a successor as it gears up for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup slated for next month, while Kaur continues to contribute on the field.
