Harmanpreet Kaur has stepped down as captain of the Indian women’s cricket team, ending a 7‑year reign that saw the side lift the 2025 ODI World Cup and claim four Asia Cup titles.
Under her guidance, India amassed four Asia Cup crowns in 2012, 2016, 2022 and 2026, and secured the nation’s first Women’s ODI World Cup on home soil in November 2025.
She also steered the squad to back‑to‑back gold medals at the 2022 and 2026 Asian Games, cementing India’s dominance in T20 format across the continent.
Kaur, who captained the side for an uninterrupted 7 years, told reporters that she is ready to ‘play for the love of the game’ after a decade at the helm of the T20I team.
Her exit leaves a vacuum that will be filled ahead of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in 2027, where India will look to build on its legacy.
India’s next big test will be the 2027 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup finals, and the board is already scouting for a successor.
