Assam Police’s Operation "Saathi" has detained 524 suspected child marriage facilitators across 12 districts, including Guwahati, Jorhat, and Dibrugarh, as announced by Commissioner of Police Rajdeep Das on Thursday.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the government had seen a 30% drop in registered child marriages in the districts targeted by the operation, citing the latest census data released by the Ministry of Women and Child Development.
A 16‑year‑old girl, Rina Sharma, who was rescued from a scheduled marriage in Sivasagar, told reporters she had been forced to marry at age 13, and her family is now receiving counseling from NGOs.
Prosecutors will file charges against 120 couples still pending under the Indian Penal Code, and a special court in Guwahati is set to convene hearings next month, according to the state judiciary’s schedule.
