ShelterBox, the UK charity that supplies emergency shelter kits to disaster victims, announced on 28 October 2026 that its book‑club programme has amassed £2 million in donations. The club, launched in 2018, has already shipped 160,169 books to more than 10,000 members, who read and discuss titles that span 67 countries.
Members contribute a monthly fee of £10–£15, receive a new title every six weeks, and vote on the next book, turning a routine reading habit into a coordinated fundraising effort. The selection process encourages readers to explore fiction, memoirs and stories that spotlight displacement, resilience and hope.
The raised funds will buy 100,000 kitchen sets, 68,965 shelter toolkits and 5,000 family tents, enough to shelter roughly 100,000 families across the globe. ShelterBox has already deployed aid in Nepal after flooding, and in Venezuela and Colombia following recent earthquakes.
"This milestone shows how community engagement can translate into life‑saving resources," said Ranjit Kumar, CEO of ShelterBox. "The book club’s reach and impact grow every year, proving that reading and relief can go hand in hand."
Victoria Evans of Berkshire, a club member, said the books let her travel through stories and learn about cultures she otherwise would not have explored. Her experience echoes that of many members who find purpose and connection amid the club’s shared reading and charitable mission.
ShelterBox will launch a new disaster‑response reading theme in January 2027, with the next book selection set for 15 January. The charity plans to expand the club’s reach to 15,000 members by the end of the year, aiming for an additional £3 million in donations.
