Aryash Shyam, a ninth‑grader at Lehigh Valley Academy, captured the 2026 John Estey Student Writing Competition’s top award, earning $1,000 for his historical‑fiction piece set in a Philadelphia print shop on July 4, 1776.
The competition, organized by the American Writers Museum in Chicago, selected Shyam as one of four middle‑school winners nationwide.
Shyam’s story, "The Weight of Lead," follows a 13‑year‑old apprentice who realizes the gap between the Declaration’s promise of equality and the reality for those denied freedom.
Beyond the prize, Shyam has already made waves in science, winning the Genes in Space Junior Scientist Award for a CRISPR‑based diagnostic proposal and securing first place in the American National Standards Institute Student Paper Competition for a paper on medical tubing safety.
The American Writers Museum will feature Shyam’s narrative in its online archive, and the academy’s guidance counselor confirmed that his scholarship earnings will fund a summer research internship at a local university.
Shyam’s success story is a reminder that talent can bloom in high schools far from the city’s spotlight, and his achievements are already inspiring peers in the Lehigh Valley to pursue interdisciplinary learning.
