Gruver Farm Scholarship Foundation has generated $400,000 from 410 acres of donated land in Gruver, Texas, this harvest season. The 640‑acre plot, originally bequeathed by Karl Nielsen in 1984, has been leased to local farmers for 40 years before the school district pivoted to a community‑run farm.
Farmers volunteer their own equipment and labor, planting corn in spring and wheat in autumn, then selling the harvest to fund scholarships. The arrangement began in 2012 after a high‑school football‑game conversation sparked the idea.
Scholarships are awarded on a points‑based system, with up to $40,000 per student; the program has already disbursed nearly $3 million across 300 graduates.
The program has lifted 48 first‑generation families to college; Sydney Ortiz, a 2023 graduate, is now studying education at West Texas A&M, receiving $3,000 per semester.
Gruver ISD said the 2025 harvest will feed the next cohort of scholarships, with a projected $400,000 target for the upcoming August graduation.
