Panama's 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck the country’s central provinces on Monday, injuring 27 people and damaging nearly 900 homes. The seismic event, recorded at a depth of 35 km, followed Friday’s 7.7‑magnitude quake that already left hundreds of homes in ruins.
The European‑Mediterranean Seismological Centre logged more than 300 aftershocks since the Monday tremor, indicating a still‑active fault line in the region.
Panama’s emergency management agency declared a national state of emergency over the weekend, citing widespread structural damage and the urgent need for coordinated relief.
Officials warned that the damage toll could rise as assessments reach remote communities in Los Santos, Cocle, Veraguas, and Herrera, where infrastructure is hardest hit.
Rescue teams have been deployed to the most affected provinces, and the government is coordinating with local municipalities to evaluate building safety and plan for additional aid.
