Delhi Capitals sealed a historic deal at the Kochi auction, buying 15‑year‑old off‑spinner Uma Kashvi for Rs 10 lakh – the lowest‑priced, youngest player ever in WPL history.
Kashvi’s rise has been meteoric. At 12 she smashed an unbeaten 217 in a Bengaluru inter‑school match, then toppled the U‑15 one‑day record with 516 runs at an average of 172, including a blistering 158 off 66 against Manipur that powered Karnataka to a 321‑run victory.
Jonathan Batty, the Capitals’ head coach, said the franchise had been eyeing the teenager for months: “Her talent is undeniable, and we see her as a long‑term superstar. We’re not expecting instant fireworks; this is a developmental project.”
She’s slated to be part of India’s Under‑19 World Cup squad in Bangladesh and Nepal, which means her WPL debut could be postponed until after the tournament, but the Capitals are ready to nurture her when the window opens.
The auction saw Delhi pick four new faces – Kashvi, explosive batter Kiran Navgire, all‑rounder Nazma Khan and Scotland spinner Kirstie Gordon – adding Rs 1.05 crore to a total spend of Rs 14.95 crore, with 13 core players retained.
With the 2027 season on the horizon, the Capitals are betting that Kashvi’s fiery all‑round potential will soon translate into wickets and runs for the franchise, while her international exposure will keep her sharp.
