It was a nightmare debut for a comeback man. Nic Maddinson, back in the Test setup after nearly a decade, faced 33 balls and left Kingsmead for zero. The scoreline is brutal, but the context makes it worse: it’s the longest innings for a duck by a Test opener in the 21st century. A milestone no one wanted to break on his return.
The damage started early. Captain Pat Cummins won the toss and batted, but the top order crumbled. Travis Head dropped an edge for just nine, and then Maddinson, drafted in for the injured Cameron Green, couldn’t find his rhythm. He was dismissed after 33 deliveries, leaving Australia reeling before the day was over. For a player still adjusting after overcoming testicular cancer, the pressure was palpable.
The selection itself had drawn fire before the first ball was bowled. Former opener Matthew Hayden took aim at the selectors on the All Over Bar The Cricket podcast, calling the current squad a "pile of mediocrity." He specifically targeted chief selector George Bailey and Tony Dodemaide, arguing that expecting a player with a 37.11 first-class average to perform at the highest level is "frigging dreaming." "You are piling up this dog s* explanation," Hayden said, bluntly dismissing the rationale behind picking batters without elite first-class consistency.
South Africa capitalized on the chaos. They recalled Anrich Nortje and opted for two spinners, leaving Kagiso Rabada out as he recovers from a hamstring injury. The attack was designed to disrupt, and it worked. With the top order gone, Australia now faces a long, uphill battle to salvage their innings in a pitch that favors patience over aggression. The stakes for the series just got considerably higher.
Australia will look to rebuild their batting lineup on day two, hoping the tail can hold the fort while the middle order settles. The first Test continues at Kingsmead, Durban, with every run now counted double.
