Paris police ordered a new curfew on Tuesday night, covering the République Square and Les Halles district after the weekend’s riots and looting.
The curfew will run from 21:00 Tuesday to 04:00 Wednesday, while a ban on public gatherings will take effect at 18:00 Tuesday across Les Halles, the presidential palace, Parliament, Senate, Champs‑Elysées, Vendôme square and nearby train stations.
Police Commissioner Jean‑Michel Leclerc said the measure was necessary to prevent a return of violence after the authorities had said the earlier curfew had restored calm.
The ban on gatherings—extending beyond the usual 18:00 curfew—aims to curb unrest in the city’s most crowded shopping and political hubs.
A Les Halles shopkeeper, Amélie Durand, told reporters she feared the curfew would slash her sales, but she understood the need for safety.
The curfew will be reviewed after 04:00 Wednesday, with police ready to enforce further restrictions if necessary.
