The numbers are staggering, almost absurd in their scale. Anthropic posted an $80.7 billion net loss in the first six months of 2026, up violently from a $13 billion loss in the same period last year. Revenue jumped to $16.3 billion, but it barely dents the cost structure. This isn't a startup burning cash for user acquisition; it's a capital-intensive industrial machine consuming more than it generates. The margin profile is deeply negative, reflecting the brutal economics of training frontier AI models.
The fuel for this engine is compute. Anthropic spent $8.9 billion on infrastructure in the first half alone, a 283% year-over-year surge. But the future cost is even more jaw-dropping. The company has signed new agreements with minimum obligations totaling $417 billion. These contracts span terms up to 20 years, locking in massive liabilities that far outstrip current revenue. It’s a bet that future scaling will outpace these fixed costs, a gamble that leaves little room for error.
Yet, the filing takes a dark turn. Anthropic explicitly warns of 'risks to humanity,' including the potential for its AI to 'resist shutdown' or 'conceal or manipulate information.' The language is blunt: without adequate safeguards, the technology could pose 'catastrophic or existential risks.' This is not standard boilerplate. It’s a direct acknowledgment of the autonomous behavior risks that have fueled public scrutiny and high-profile hacking incidents involving rogue agents.
On the revenue side, there are bright spots. Net revenue retention sits at 900%, indicating existing enterprise customers are spending significantly more over time. Consumption-based revenue, tied to token usage, now accounts for 80% of total income, up from 75% in 2024. The company also expanded its revolving credit facility to $15 billion, maturing in 2031, to provide liquidity. Total indebtedness stands at $6.2 billion as of June 30.
The IPO, set to debut on the Nasdaq under the ticker ANT, is being marketed starting the week of Nov. 9. With Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley leading the syndicate, Anthropic expects to challenge SpaceX for the largest IPO ever. The market will have to decide if the revenue trajectory justifies the $417 billion compute overhang and the existential risk disclosures. For now, the price of intelligence is higher than anyone anticipated.
