In a press conference on Saturday evening in New Delhi, BJP MP Sambit Patra criticised the Congress for staging a mock parliament that called for the impeachment of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, a move the BJP says is a political maneuver to destabilise the government.
Patra mocked Rahul Gandhi, calling him a 'mock prime minister' and urging him to sit in a kurta‑pyjama in the mock parliament, a jab that echoed the party's broader attack on the opposition's legitimacy.
The BJP accused Congress of seeking regime change rather than addressing alleged election irregularities, asserting that the 'public impeachment' is a tactic to force a change of government.
Earlier this month, student leader Neha Bora marched with Rahul Gandhi in a protest demanding Kumar's resignation, a stand that the BJP labeled an attempt to replicate anti‑government movements seen in Nepal and Bangladesh.
Congress is expected to defend its stance at a scheduled parliamentary debate next week, while the Election Commission will likely issue a statement to counter the allegations.
