Mumbai Police has launched an inquiry into a Rs 65‑crore desilting contract for the Mithi River, a BMC sanitation project that employed dredging machines from Kochi‑based Matprop Technical Services Private Limited. The contract was meant to clear sludge using specialised equipment, but allegations of financial misconduct have surfaced.
Investigators say that Ketan Kadam and Jay Joshi colluded with BMC Storm Water Drains officials and Matprop staff to siphon off money through inflated bills. The scheme allegedly diverted funds by overcharging for the equipment and services.
Morea's name entered the investigation after call‑detail records revealed multiple exchanges between him, Kadam, and the actor’s brother. Police suspect that beyond personal ties, there were financial transactions linking the actor to the alleged fraud.
The case is now under the purview of the Enforcement Directorate, which is probing potential money‑laundering violations under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. A resident of the Dharavi neighbourhood says the sludge buildup is worsening his breathing, highlighting the real‑world impact of the delay.
Morea may be called again if required, and the ED’s final report will determine whether the actor faces further scrutiny. The next step will be a formal assessment by the ED, which could lead to charges if evidence warrants.
