Bob Dylan and his brother David Zimmerman pocketed a significant windfall after selling their 25-acre Scottish estate, Aultmore House, for £4,257,650 in December 2023. The transaction, handled by Knight Frank, marked the end of a 17-year chapter for the Nobel laureate, who originally paid £2.2 million for the property in 2006.
The buyer is Angus Dundee Distillers, a whisky producer that already operates Tomintoul and Glencadam distilleries in the region. The purchase price was significantly above the £3 million threshold set by the agents when the listing went live in July 2023. Tom Stewart-Moore of Knight Frank described the sale as a straightforward exit; the property was simply “surplus to requirements” for the Zimmers.
Dylan hasn't set foot in the mansion since before the pandemic. For years, the brothers used the 16-bedroom Edwardian palace—complete with a music room, walled garden, and croquet lawn—as a holiday retreat and event venue. It’s a place steeped in Dylan’s personal history. His 1997 album Time Out of Mind features a track called “Highlands,” and he’s long cited Robert Burns as a musical and poetic influence.
The building itself has a wilder past than the rock star’s tenure. Built between 1911 and 1915 for industrialist Archibald Merrilees, the A-listed structure served as a convalescent home during World War II and later as a finishing school. It fell into disrepair before Dylan and Zimmerman restored it around 2000.
While the sale price is public, the exact net profit remains unclear once maintenance and transaction costs are factored in. The new owners have not yet revealed their plans for the historic grounds, leaving the future of the Cairngorms landmark open to speculation.
