The District Consumer Commission in Aligarh delivered its verdict on 12 October 2026 after a single‑day hearing that saw no representative from BBCN Royal Restaurant present.
The complaint arose when Ankur Agarwal, a resident of Aligarh, ordered a bottle of water on 11 March 2026. The bottle’s printed MRP read ₹18, yet the bill listed ₹20 for the drink.
Commission chairperson Ms. Ritu Sharma said the ₹2 overcharge violated the Consumer Protection Act. She directed the restaurant to deposit ₹1 lakh into the Consumer Welfare Fund, pay ₹1,000 to Agarwal as compensation, and cover ₹5,000 of his legal costs.
The order gives the restaurant 45 days to comply; any failure to meet the deadline will trigger further legal action, possibly including asset seizure.
Agarwal told reporters he felt vindicated, saying the fine sent a clear message that even a Rs 2 overcharge cannot be ignored.
