On Thursday, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) petitioned the Kolkata metropolitan special court, claiming that former West Bengal education minister Partha Chatterjee has not met the weekly reporting requirement or other conditions set by the Calcutta High Court after his release from a three‑year pre‑trial detention in 2023.
Chatterjee’s lawyer, Anurag Dutta, cited the former minister’s ongoing health problems, noting several hospitalizations that, he argued, justified a virtual appearance request.
The High Court had imposed a raft of restrictions—weekly reporting to the CBI, surrendering his passport, staying within West Bengal, and prohibiting contact with witnesses—while allowing him to remain an MLA but barring him from contesting the 2026 state elections.
The recruitment case, which alleges irregularities in the hiring of teaching and non‑teaching staff across government and aided schools, remains pending, with Chatterjee denying any wrongdoing.
The special court has set the next hearing for September 29, at which it will decide whether to lift or cancel Chatterjee’s bail.
