Suyash Sinha, a 31‑year‑old public servant of Indian origin, was denied bail in the Australian Capital Territory Magistrates Court on Wednesday, October 14, after police charged him with stalking a woman he met on a dating app.
The arrest came during a police operation at Sinha’s Canberra home, where officers executed a search warrant and seized multiple electronic devices. Evidence included a trail of harassing messages sent over several months, with usernames such as "will be seeing you soon…" and "I hate you so much, goodbye."
The complainant, who had reported the harassment in September, told police that she was terrified and suffering from post‑traumatic stress disorder. She had recently been advised to deactivate her social media accounts after receiving a spate of unnerving friend requests.
Special Magistrate Lucinda Wilson refused Sinha’s bail application, stating that his "intense" behaviour demonstrated a complete disregard for the victim’s safety and wellbeing. She warned that releasing him could jeopardise the woman's security and potentially interfere with witnesses or evidence.
The court will reconvene next month to consider further proceedings, while Sinha remains in custody pending the outcome of the prosecution’s case.
