The Nifty closed at 22,010, barely above the 22,000 technical support, prompting JM Financial’s Rahul Sharma to flag a largecap‑led rally.
Technical charts show a multi‑year low in the largecap‑midcap correlation, and breadth has shifted toward the benchmark constituents. Sharma added, “The leadership that has been so persistent is now overcrowded.”
Banking and financials are the front‑line, with HDFC Bank and ICICI’s valuations tightening as selling pressure eases. Automobiles and defence also feature, while Reliance Industries remains a heavyweight anchor. “Selling pressure has eased and valuations have become more attractive,” Sharma said.
Macro heads of the market remain crude oil and US bond yields. Oil prices stay volatile amid geopolitical jitters, and a 10‑basis‑point rise in the 10‑year Treasury could test the 22,000 floor. “Improving domestic earnings could support sentiment,” he added.
Sharma’s base‑case, or Case A, envisions the Nifty holding 22,000 and largecaps leading the next leg toward 24,000. He cautioned that a break below 22,000 could push the index toward 20,500, a level that would trigger a deeper correction.
Investors are advised to stay alert to midcap volatility and to keep a close eye on the 22,000 support, as the market’s next phase may hinge on largecap momentum and macro tailwinds.
