Himanta Biswa Sarma, Chief Minister of Assam, threw his full political weight behind Prime Minister Narendra Modi's latest attack on the Congress on Friday. Speaking after Modi's address at the NDTV World Summit 2026, Sarma validated the PM's characterization of Rahul Gandhi as a "failed product" that the opposition keeps relaunching to no avail.
"Yes, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is absolutely right," Sarma stated. "Congress seems to have only one product to present before the country - Rahul Gandhi. Despite repeated failures, the party continues to relaunch him, hoping for a different outcome. However, the product remains the same, and the relaunch attempts continue to fall short." The Assam leader framed the issue as a market failure, noting that while the "launchers" never tire, the "customers" have grown weary of the repetitive strategy.
Sarma also amplified Modi's specific jab regarding Gandhi's foreign trips. He alleged that the Congress leader uses international travel as a break after domestic political setbacks, only to return for another round of campaigning. "You keep launching your product again and again. It fails every time, yet you never get tired of relaunching the same product in the market," Sarma said, referencing a comparison he had made in an earlier interview.
The exchange follows Modi's speech on October 22, where he contrasted the global search for a "new order" with what he described as the Congress's desire for "disorder" in India. By linking domestic political opposition to broader geopolitical instability, the PM set a heavy tone for the summit. Sarma's Friday comments serve as a state-level endorsement of that national narrative, ensuring the "failed product" rhetoric reaches beyond Delhi's political center.
The Congress has already signaled a counter-attack, with Shashi Tharoor previously responding to the PM's jabs. Expect the opposition to frame Sarma's comments as a reflection of the BJP's own insecurity about its polling numbers in the Northeast.
