Chelmsley Wood Patriots appeared in Meriden Park around 11 pm on Friday, confronting a small group of Indian students who had been strolling through the park after a night out. A member of the group demanded, “What made you come to England?” and, after the students explained they were just visiting Birmingham for the evening, issued a final warning: “Do not come round here again. Go home.”
The group, which brands itself as a community watchdog, maintains that its purpose is to protect women and children in local parks. Local activists, however, accuse the Patriots of targeting people on the basis of ethnicity, pointing out that the students had no reason to be singled out. Former councillor Shesh Sheshabhatter told BirminghamLive, “We can see no reason they were targeted other than the colour of their skin. Nobody should be treated differently because of their accent.”
West Midlands Police confirmed that they were aware of reports about the group and that an appropriate policing response was underway. Solihull Police issued a statement, with Inspector Jenny Willetts saying, “Stop‑and‑search powers belong exclusively to police officers acting under specific legal provisions, including the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984. We do not endorse or encourage the activities of the Chelmsley Wood Patriots.”
The incident has sparked outrage among anti‑racism groups and local residents who fear a growing climate of intimidation. Police will review the footage and may issue a statement after the inquiry concludes. Anyone with information is urged to contact the West Midlands Police through their online portal or by calling 101.
