The competition, run by Creative Communication, attracted more than 2,500 entries from students nationwide—each entry a test of imagination and skill. Gonzalez’s submission, 'All Stitched Together,' weaves the colors of the Colombian flag into a narrative about dual identity, earning the judges praise for its lyrical imagery and cultural resonance.
The family’s Colombian roots played a pivotal role; grandparents travel every other year, and Spanish is spoken at home, shaping the poem’s themes and the young writer’s voice.
Gonzalez began crafting stories in first grade, turning folded printer paper into her own 'Brave Girl' books, and later turned her songwriting into poetry after an aunt’s encouragement. Her mother, Lauren, said the top‑10 placement validates years of perseverance, echoing the excitement that filled their kitchen when the results were announced.
The contest will release the full rankings on June 5, and Gonzalez is slated to read her poem at the national awards ceremony in July, a gathering that will feature keynote speakers and winners from across the country.
