Chahal was left out of India's 2024 T20 World Cup squad, a decision that has left many of his fans scratching their heads. The 36‑year‑old leg‑spinner, who has taken 96 wickets in 78 international T20s, never stepped onto the field during the tournament.
And Rohit Sharma, who captained India in the World Cup, explained the rationale behind the move. 'We want batters till number eight,' he told Chahal during a County stint in 2023—adding that an extra fast bowler was needed to balance the XI.
But Chahal, who had just returned from a stint with Northamptonshire, shrugged off the omission. 'After the World Cup, I just stopped thinking about selection,' he told Aakash Chopra, admitting that the decision had no effect on his focus for the IPL.
Still, the IPL season saw Chahal maintain his reputation as a lethal wicket‑taker, adding 233 wickets at an economy of 8.05 over 188 matches— the highest among Indian bowlers in the league. He finished first‑class cricket with 148 wickets from 49 games, after which he announced his retirement.
However, India's strategy leans heavily on batting depth, signalling that spin will take a back seat for the foreseeable future. Chahal’s next chance will come at the 2026 Asian Games, where he may need to re‑earn a spot in the squad.
India’s next test of this new balance will come in the T20 World Cup group stage against Sri Lanka on Thursday.
