Yemen’s head of the presidential council, Rashad al‑Alimi, declared on Sunday that his forces would commence a full‑scale assault to reclaim every Houthi‑controlled district across the country.
The move comes after the group seized the al‑Safiya district and severed the main road linking Taiz to Aden, strangling the city’s supply lines.
Saudi‑led coalition jets have dominated the air war, while Yemen’s own air arm remains largely idle. In the last 48 hours, the Houthis launched ballistic missiles and drones at Saudi Aramco sites in Riyadh and Khurais, igniting large fires that disrupted production.
Al‑Alimi said the government will coordinate with coalition forces to target Houthi strongholds before the next major air strike scheduled for Monday, a push that could shift the balance in the south.
Residents of Taiz, already living under siege since 2015, fear that the intensified fighting could push them into deeper displacement, adding a stark human cost to the strategic gambit.
