The new scanner at Maui Memorial Medical Center is live. It uses X-rays and computer processing to generate detailed internal images, allowing physicians to spot injuries and diagnose conditions with greater speed and precision.
The installation was formalized on June 8, 2026, during a ceremony attended by Winfrey, hospital imaging staff, and local spiritual leader Kahu Kimokeo Kapahulehua. Kapahulehua led a traditional blessing, specifically honoring the hands of the caregivers who will operate the equipment.
This donation is distinct from Winfrey’s earlier humanitarian work on the island. In August 2023, she and actor Dwayne Johnson launched the People’s Fund of Maui, which distributed $60 million to over 8,100 wildfire survivors. That fund provided $1,200 monthly payments to help displaced residents cover housing and immediate needs.
While the cash aid addressed immediate survival needs, the CT scanner addresses long-term medical infrastructure. Maui Health officials noted the equipment will strengthen access to high-quality diagnostic services for the entire county.
The hospital has not disclosed the specific monetary value of this healthcare donation. However, the timing underscores a shift from emergency relief to sustainable community support, ensuring that medical diagnostics can keep pace with the population’s ongoing health needs.
