The court concluded that the fatal crash on Scott Hall Road, near a Jaguar dealership in northern England, was the result of a reckless street‑race that killed Justyna Hulboj and her daughter Lena Czepczor in January 2023. Riyat and Bhachu, who had no prior acquaintance, were caught on CCTV and dashcam footage racing side‑by‑side at a traffic light, with Bhachu’s Audi TT RS ultimately losing control at nearly 90mph and striking the pedestrians.
Riyat remained on the scene, encouraging Bhachu to push his car harder, while Bhachu’s dashcam captured the moment he hit a kerb, lost control, and crashed into the mother‑daughter pair. The evidence presented at trial showed a clear sequence of events that contradicted Riyat’s denial of responsibility.
Judge Ray Singh delivered the sentence in June 2024, awarding Riyat 16 years and Bhachu 12 years for two counts of causing death by dangerous driving. Both men also received six‑year driving bans and will be required to pass extended driving tests before any license is reinstated.
DI Paul Conroy of West Yorkshire Police’s Major Collision Enquiry Team described the incident as a stark reminder that a public road is not a race track, adding that the sentencing marks the end of a protracted criminal justice process for the victims’ family.
The convictions send a clear message that high‑speed street racing on public roads carries severe legal consequences, and the sentences will be carried out in a UK prison, with driving bans and retraining as part of the rehabilitation process.
