IDBI Bank shares are set for a valuation reset. Nitin Aggarwal, Senior Group Vice President and Head of BFSI Institutional Equities at Motilal Oswal Financial Services, argues the stock deserves a higher multiple given its superior operating metrics compared to other public sector banks. The catalyst? The green light from the government for Fairfax Financial Holdings to buy a 60% stake. The price tag is steep—just under ₹53,000 crore—but the strategic implications are even steeper.
The deal structure is clear. The government and LIC will retain a combined 34% stake, but control shifts to the Canadian investment group. Aggarwal notes this marks a significant pivot in how New Delhi approaches public sector bank divestments. It’s not just about selling a stake; it’s about signaling that performance-based re-ratings are possible for PSBs that actually deliver. IDBI fits that bill, boasting industry-leading Return on Equity and healthy CASA mixes that rival some private sector lenders.
Valuation math is currently conservative. The stock trades at 1.4 times its last reported book value of ₹57 per share, dropping to roughly 1.2x on a forward basis. Aggarwal suggests this is a floor, not a ceiling. As the Fairfax integration proceeds, the multiple is likely to expand. But there’s a secondary wildcard: CSB Bank. Speculation is swirling about a merger between IDBI and CSB, or potentially a stake sale. If IDBI absorbs or restructures its CSB holding, it could further de-risk the balance sheet and attract fresh institutional interest.
CSB Bank itself is under pressure. The stock has struggled with concerns over its liability profile and heavy concentration in gold loans. Aggarwal sees two paths: a merger with IDBI or a divestment. Either way, clarity on corporate action could unlock value. “From the current stock price, it makes sense to stay invested in CSB for the owners,” he said, advising patience until terms are finalized. For IDBI holders, the message is similar: hold tight. The Fairfax deal is the engine, and the CSB move is the turbocharger.
