Adani Power and Bhutan's state‑owned Druk Green Power Corp disclosed yesterday that they will develop a 770‑MW Chamkharchhu-I hydropower plant on the Chamkarchhu River in Zhemgang District.
The new venture follows the 570‑MW Wangchhu project signed in September 2025, and is part of a 5,000‑MW hydropower development Memorandum of Understanding signed in May 2025.
Prime Minister Lyonchen Dasho Tshering Tobgay officiated the ceremony, joined by Ministers of Finance and Energy, representatives from Druk Holding & Investments Limited, Bhutan Power Corporation Limited, the DGPC Board, and Adani Power.
Anil Sardana, Managing Director of Adani Power, said the project will accelerate South Asia's energy transition and create long‑term value for both nations, while Dasho Chhewang Rinzin, Managing Director of DGPC, pledged to realise the initiative and broaden future opportunities.
The project will be executed under a Build‑Own‑Operate‑and‑Transfer model, with a 49:51 equity split and a 30‑year concession, aiming to satisfy Bhutan's peak winter demand and export surplus green power to India during summer.
Construction is scheduled to start in early 2027, with commissioning expected by 2033, marking a new milestone in Bhutan‑India energy cooperation.
