The India Meteorological Department released its latest bulletin Thursday, Oct 1, 2024, warning that monsoon rains would surge across southern and northeastern India. Rainfall, expected to reach up to 60 km/h winds and lightning, will hit Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, while Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura face widespread showers.
In Kerala and Mahe, precipitation could reach 100 mm over 24 hours, potentially flooding low‑lying villages. Karnataka’s coastal belt may see scattered heavy downpours, whereas Tamil Nadu’s coastal districts could experience isolated thunderstorms.
The northeast, a region already battling water‑logging, will see a mix of widespread and isolated rain, with Assam and Meghalaya experiencing scattered showers and occasional lightning. The monsoon's withdrawal is gradually easing northwest and central India, but pockets of rain will linger until October 3 in some areas.
Meanwhile, Delhi‑NCR, along with parts of central and western India, is forecast to stay clear and warm, temperatures climbing to 34 °C during the day. The dry spell may prompt local authorities to lift heat alerts and advise residents to stay hydrated.
Weather forecasters urge residents in the affected zones to secure loose items, check drainage, and monitor local advisories. The IMD has already issued a "rainfall alert" to state disaster management authorities, and the next bulletin is scheduled for Oct 2 to assess the monsoon's retreat.
