State Election Commissioner Sudhanshu Pandey announced on Wednesday that Ladakh will conduct panchayat elections on Nov 21, 2026, the first since 2018, when the last halqa elections were held. The eight‑year hiatus follows the need to reconstitute local governance structures after the Union Territory’s re‑organisation.
The commission will release notifications on Oct 26, opening the nomination window that closes on Nov 2. Scrutiny of nomination papers is slated for Nov 3, and candidates may withdraw until Nov 5. Polling will take place on Nov 21, with the entire election cycle concluding by Nov 30.
A Model Code of Conduct, enforced from Oct 26, bars communal rhetoric, use of places of worship for campaigning, bribery, voter intimidation, and campaigning within 100 metres of polling stations during the final 48 hours. Political parties must secure permits for meetings, avoid obstructing rivals, and keep official machinery away from electioneering.
The schedule marks a significant moment for Ladakh’s rural communities, which have long awaited structured local representation. The commission’s clear timetable aims to ensure free and fair elections, a priority following the territory’s recent administrative changes.
Looking ahead, the State Election Commission will monitor the election’s compliance with the Model Code, while the central Election Commission of India will oversee the process to align with national standards.
