On Friday, the Delhi High Court halted all victory processions following the Delhi University Students’ Union elections, ordering that any parade on campus, hostels or roads would be treated as contempt and subject to criminal proceedings.
The bench, led by Chief Justice D.K. Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia, sent notices to 140 candidates and every student body, demanding explanations for alleged electoral misconduct and warning of collective damage.
It slammed the use of cavalcades, luxury car stunts and even weapons on the campaign trail, questioning how such displays could coexist with a sizeable police presence.
Delhi Police were instructed to enforce the ban immediately, with the court threatening administrative action against any defiance, while the university was asked to adopt preventive measures.
Votes will be counted on Saturday, and the court said it would review the incident reports to decide whether to impose financial penalties on the offending parties.
