Delhi Police filed a chargesheet against seven accused in the mob lynching of 54‑year‑old Manipuri musician Chongtham Vikram Singh in Kilokari, south Delhi, on September 7. The document names the suspects under Sections 61, 103(2), 103(1) and 332(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, alleging criminal conspiracy, group murder, murder and house‑trespass with intent to commit an offence. So the court will now examine the evidence and decide whether to keep the case under police jurisdiction or hand it over to a higher agency.
The chargesheet follows an FIR lodged by Singh’s son, Yaiphaba, who recounted how the victim was attacked by four to five youths at home on the night of September 6. He claimed the assailants kicked and punched him after he confronted them over noise from a nearby dhaba, before fleeing the scene. The son later took him to Holy Family Hospital, where the musician later died during treatment.
The death sparked condemnation from the Manipur Students Association Delhi and the state’s Chief Minister, Yumnam Khemchand Singh, who urged Delhi’s police chief to expedite a high‑level probe and threatened to transfer the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation if necessary. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju had earlier promised a strong chargesheet within two weeks, underscoring the government’s commitment to protecting people from the Northeast.
The Saket Courts will now review the chargesheet, and officials plan to initiate a comprehensive investigation. If the evidence warrants, the case may be transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation, with a final verdict pending in the coming weeks.
