The Enforcement Directorate (ED) hauled Samajwadi Party stalwart Mohammad Azam Khan into custody on 13 Oct 2026, following a money‑laundering probe that began after the Allahabad High Court granted him bail in a dual PAN card case. The ED has provisionally attached land and buildings owned by Jauhar University to the extent of Rs 426.46 cr, with a market value of Rs 1,170 cr, effectively freezing the university’s assets while the investigation proceeds.
The probe, launched under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), is built on 26 FIRs registered at the Azeem Nagar Police Station in Rampur. They allege that Azam Khan, who also serves as honorary chancellor of the university, forcibly seized 45 plots of enemy property—about 34 acres—in Village Singhankhera, after the Ministry of Home Affairs had cancelled the lease to the Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar Trust.
Further, the ED’s inquiry uncovered that funds earmarked for public works were diverted to the university, that contractors awarded government contracts funneled money back to the trust as donations, and that cleaning machinery purchased for Rampur Nagar Palika was redirected to the university premises. The ED has also shared these findings with Uttar Pradesh Police under Section 66(2) of the PMLA.
The next phase sees Azam Khan produced before a Ghaziabad court, where he is expected to be formally arrested. The court hearing will determine whether the 28 additional FIRs and charge‑sheets—ranging from alleged demolitions of tenant houses to unlawful land occupation—will lead to further convictions.
