The Legislative Council elections on October 23 featured 28 seats across Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar and Karnataka, with Congress contesting 12 of them.
The lone victory came in Nagpur, where Abhijit Wanjari of Congress edged BJP's Sudhakar Kohale by 3,271 votes, capturing 67,231 votes to Kohale's 63,960.
BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari ridiculed the result on X, writing, "Lol imagine the state of Congress, they are celebrating 1 seat!" The comment followed the announcement of the results.
Former Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam also posted on X, questioning whether a single seat could be considered a national success and criticized Congress for spotlighting Nagpur while ignoring defeats elsewhere.
The result has sparked debate over electronic voting machines, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP's Sudhanshu Trivedi calling for a return to ballot paper, while Congress demands a review of EVMs.
Congress will convene a central committee meeting next week to decide on a strategy for the 2027 Assembly elections, amid concerns that the loss undermines its credibility as a national contender.
