Four students died after inhaling toxic gas while cleaning a 12‑foot deep water tank at Maharshi Panini Gurukul in Vrindavan on Oct. 7, 2026.
The submersible tank, fitted with a pump, had been emitting a foul odor for weeks. When the fifth student stepped in, the air filled with a lethal cloud, killing four and leaving one survivor conscious but in need of higher‑level care. Victims were 20‑year‑old Manu Katare of Jabalpur, 17‑year‑old Devansh Sharma of Vidisha, 17‑year‑old Aryan Pandey of Kaushambi, and 18‑year‑old Vishu Sharma of Meerut.
District Magistrate Chandra Prakash Singh arrived within hours, ordered a full probe and warned that strict action would follow any negligence. Senior Superintendent of Police Shlok Kumar said CCTV footage was being reviewed, and the survivor was transported to a tertiary care centre. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath posted a condolence message on X, calling the loss “soul‑wrenching” and promising state support for the families.
The survivor, a 17‑year‑old student, recounted how a fellow’s fall pulled him down, and he escaped only by a narrow margin. Families of the deceased are being contacted; the bodies have been sent to the district mortuary. The incident has rattled the 150‑strong student body that comes from across the state to study Sanskrit.
The school will undergo a safety audit, and the state education department will review its licensing before any students return. A formal complaint will be filed against the institution, and an inquiry into the maintenance of the tank will begin next week.
