Delhi Police arrested Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi after they crossed into Akashvani Bhawan, the home of the Election Commission, while marching toward the CEC’s office on Tuesday.
The officers seized the leaders and several other Congress MPs, including KC Venugopal and Pawan Khera, and hauled them to a police station for questioning.
KC Venugopal, who had called other INDIA bloc parties earlier that day, said the move was not pre‑planned and that the leaders were unaware of the police presence at Akashvani.
The protest stemmed from allegations that the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls has been manipulated to favour certain parties, a claim the Election Commission has denied.
Delhi Police has lodged an FIR naming Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, their supporters and any MPs who joined the demonstration, charging them with unlawful entry and disturbance of peace.
The case will be heard by a magistrate next month, while opposition leaders across the spectrum urge the court to rule in favour of their right to protest.
The incident has already sparked a flurry of reactions on social media, with a local resident who watched the arrest from a nearby café describing the scene as "the most chaotic moment of the year."
