The bench, comprising CJI Surya Kant, Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana, heard testimony from senior advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan about alleged police excesses during protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Sankaranarayanan presented evidence that police detained lawyers, used physical force and dragged Senior Advocate Shadan Farasat through the streets, while also citing the absence of a Section 163 order in the public domain.
He also highlighted reports of children struck with lathis and the detention of senior advocates Dinesh Dwivedi and Uttara Babbar in buses.
CJI Surya Kant, preferring not to add further commentary, reiterated that every lawyer and member of the Bar has the right to participate in peaceful protests at designated locations.
The bench has listed the plea of the Supreme Court Bar Association and others for a hearing on Tuesday, where the court will consider the complaint.
