Amarinder Singh Raja Warring handed his resignation as Punjab Congress chief to Rahul Gandhi in Delhi on Friday, 27 April 2024. Warring, who had led the state unit for four years, cited growing factionalism and the recent appointment of Sachin Pilot as AICC in-charge as reasons for stepping down.
During the meeting, Warring said he had informed Gandhi of the party’s challenges and strengths, and that Pilot’s arrival had "removed Raja from the post" according to his own assessment. He added that he had only met Pilot for about fifteen minutes that day and had not spoken to him since.
The resignation comes just weeks before the Punjab Assembly elections slated for early 2025, forcing the party to decide a new leader. The timing has intensified speculation about the next chief of the Punjab unit.
Party insiders suggest former minister Vijay Inder Singla, a co‑treasurer of the AICC, could be the frontrunner to replace Warring, though a formal selection is still pending. The decision will be made ahead of the election campaign launch next month.
