At the Brahmaputra Riverfront, the launch unfolded under a clear sky, with Himanta Biswa Sarma presenting the bamboo‑crafted frame to a crowd of reporters and local dignitaries. During the ceremony, he remarked that the bike’s frame, made from locally sourced bamboo, is purportedly stronger than steel, a claim that could redefine light‑weight cycling technology. The bicycle would be categorized under the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), ensuring safety and quality benchmarks.
Bamboo India Pvt Ltd, led by founder Yugesh Suresh Sinde, announced its new brand, Assam Bamboo Cycle, with backing from the Assam Industrial Development Corporation, Guwahati Smart City Limited, and the Guwahati Municipal Corporation. Sinde highlighted that the company plans to launch three primary models: a single‑gear, a geared, and a battery‑powered bicycle, and that child‑size variants will follow. These models aim to transition bamboo from craft to mainstream commuter gear.
Production is slated to start at 1,000 bicycles per month, with a future target of 5,000 units once the pilot’s performance and demand are evaluated. The company’s goal is to position bamboo bicycles as a practical daily transport option, challenging the perception that bamboo is only for decorative use.
The state government intends to distribute the bikes across Guwahati’s parks and integrate them into municipal procurement plans if public feedback proves favorable. Residents in the riverfront area will receive the first batch for trial, and their experiences will inform whether the project scales.
The next milestone is the BIS certification process, which will validate the bike’s structural integrity and safety standards. Once certified, the pilot will undergo a six‑month review period before the government decides on a full‑scale rollout across Assam.
