Ras Al Khaimah authorities announced on Saturday that every beach in the emirate would be shut until further notice, a day after a tanker leak off Umm Al Quwain forced neighboring emirates to close their shores.
The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment confirmed that the spill originated from an unidentified tanker, but offered no details on the vessel or cause. Technical teams are conducting environmental assessments while advising fishermen to avoid affected waters.
Tourism operators, including Wynn Resorts’ upcoming casino on Al Marjan Island, have paused construction, citing uncertain water quality and rising insurance costs. Local beachfront businesses report a sudden drop in visitors and a sharp decline in revenue.
Residents in Umm Al Quwain, Sharjah and Ajman reported a pungent odor that, according to the ministry, poses no health risk. Nonetheless, beach-goers are urged to stay away until the situation stabilises.
The incident comes amid heightened maritime security concerns following attacks on commercial vessels in Gulf shipping lanes during the Iran‑Israel conflict. Environmental fallout from such incidents has become a growing threat to the region’s fragile coastal ecosystems.
Environmental teams plan to complete their assessments within a week, after which safety and marine protection measures will be announced. The exact reopening date for the beaches remains pending, with authorities promising a transparent update once the evaluation concludes.
