Delhi Police moved in on Saturday, detaining Neha Bora, the national president of the All India Students’ Association, as she led a march toward Jantar Mantar with other AISA leaders. The police blocked the historic square, forcing the demonstrators to regroup at Dilli Haat, a crafts market ten kilometres away.
The protest was organized by the Cockroach Janta Party and backed by opposition parties, demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar amid allegations of electoral irregularities. AISA’s leadership, including Bora, had been vocal about government accountability and inequality, linking student grievances to wider national concerns.
After her arrest, Bora posted a video on X and Instagram announcing, "I am in detention, the movement is not," and urged supporters to protest wherever they were. Her calm tone belies a sharp political agenda, as she has built a following through speeches in both Hindi and English.
The detention triggered a surge in Google searches for Bora’s biographical details, with queries peaking on Monday morning. The spike reflects her growing visibility as a student activist who has moved from university protests in 2019‑2020 to national leadership roles.
Delhi Police stated the demonstration lacked official permission and that their action was preventive. The case will be presented to the Delhi High Court for review, marking a legal checkpoint for the ongoing protest movement.
