Bihar's top police officer, IPS officer Vinay Kumar, filed for voluntary retirement on September 25, 2024, a month before his scheduled superannuation in December.
The move follows a series of molestation cases that rattled the state last week, including a class‑X girl harassed in Jamui, a schoolgirl snatched in Darbhanga, and a girl photographed in Samastipur.
The home department accepted Kumar's VRS, relaxing the standard three‑month notice rule, and the general administration department announced that he will assume the role of Chief Information Commissioner from the date of his appointment.
Preeta Verma, a 1991‑batch IPS officer, has been acting as DGP while Kumar was on leave, and she is expected to continue until further orders.
Police actions in the three incidents included arrests of the men involved: in Jamui a group was detained after the girl and her classmate were harassed; in Darbhanga two motorcycle‑borne men were taken into custody within five hours; and in Samastipur four men were booked after a 56‑second clip went viral.
