The Central Bureau of Investigation entered Rajbir Singh Ghuman’s house in Gharachon, Sangrur, on June 21 and spent nearly six hours searching without uncovering any evidence.
Bhagwant Mann, the Aam Aadmi Party chief, blasted the operation as a “BJP‑driven political attack” and linked it to similar CBI and Enforcement Directorate actions in Jharkhand, West Bengal and Delhi ahead of elections.
BJP’s Tarun Chug dismissed the raid as “shamelessness” and urged the AAP to let the investigation run its course, while several opposition leaders gathered in the village to welcome the CBI team.
Local villagers, in a mix of protest and celebration, played dhols, performed bhangra and showered flowers on the CBI vehicles as the agents left, turning the raid into a partisan spectacle.
The CBI has said it was probing alleged financial malfeasance, but has not yet filed a report; Mann has requested the central government to order a judicial inquiry, and AAP plans to file a formal complaint by the end of the week before the October general elections.
