The Karkardooma Court, a bench of Justices Prathiba M. Singh and Vikas Mahajan, released Imam from custody for a week, allowing him to travel to Delhi to attend his cousin's wedding. The temporary freedom covers Oct 4–10 and is conditioned on his return to court.
Imam, a student activist, faces charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act linked to the 2020 North‑East Delhi riots. Prosecutors allege he was part of a “larger conspiracy” that sparked the violence.
The Supreme Court, in a January 5 ruling, rejected Imam and co‑accused Umar Khalid’s bail pleas, citing prima facie evidence that triggered the UAPA’s Section 43D(5) embargo. It granted bail to five other co‑accused but kept Imam in custody.
Delhi Police, describing Imam and Khalid as the “masterminds” behind the alleged conspiracy, filed a notice to the High Court demanding the court reject the interim bail. The police argue the Supreme Court’s order still applies.
The Delhi High Court has set a hearing for next week, where it will consider the police’s response and decide whether to extend or modify the interim bail. If the court upholds the release, Imam could return to Delhi for the wedding.
