IITs across India tallied 45 student suicides from 2020‑21 to 2024‑25, with 28 belonging to SC, ST or OBC groups—more than 62 % of the total. The remaining deaths involved 16 General‑category students, one from the Economically Weaker Sections, and none from the General category.
The tally spiked in 2023‑24, when 16 students died, up from six the year before; 13 suicides followed in 2024‑25. IIT‑Hyderabad led with seven deaths over the five years, while IIT‑Kharagpur, IIT‑Delhi and IIT‑Kanpur each reported six, and IIT‑Madras and IIT‑BHU‑Varanasi recorded five and four respectively.
The figures were compiled after all 23 IITs supplied data in response to Lok Sabha Provisionally‑Admitted Starred Diary No. 3682 dated 8 December 2025. No course‑wise breakdown or details of the circumstances surrounding the deaths were provided, limiting any causal analysis.
Parliament will consider the report when debating the next budget, and a standing committee on Education is slated to examine the findings and recommend reforms to campus mental‑health support systems. The inquiry will likely focus on whether institutional policies adequately address the pressures faced by minority students.
