Dr Abdul Majid Hakeem Elahi, Iran's chief representative, stood before an international audience at the NDTV World Summit in New Delhi and called on India to lead Middle East peace talks. He highlighted India's position as BRICS head and its extensive ties across the Persian Gulf as a unique platform for mediation.
Elahi reiterated the deep historical bond between the two nations, citing a 5,000‑year partnership that he described as "two faces of one page of one book." He stressed that India and Iran share civilizational links that could bridge divides in the region.
During the session, Elahi also updated on the health of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, noting that he remains active in state affairs. He reported that President Masoud Pezeshkian had met with the Supreme Leader for several hours, and that Iranian parliamentary leaders had held extensive discussions with him.
The diplomat shed light on the human toll of the ongoing conflict, naming the bombing of a school in Minab that killed children. He urged the United States to issue an apology for what he called "a tragedy that claimed innocent lives."
Elahi concluded by framing India’s balanced diplomacy as a potential catalyst for regional stability. He urged the Indian government to convene a special BRICS forum within the next month to craft a unified Middle East strategy.
The call has already drawn reactions from the city of New Delhi, where a community of Iranian expatriates voiced hope that India's involvement could bring relief to families displaced by war.
