Melania Trump announced Friday that a localized ceasefire in the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky takes effect on October 29. The agreement, which her office stated she personally secured, aims to open a corridor for humanitarian aid and the evacuation of elderly residents. Neither Moscow nor Kyiv had immediately confirmed the terms as of the announcement.
"The situation in Oleshky is dire," Trump said in a statement released by her office. "Oleshky is a front-line war city on the brink of disaster." She claimed that without her direct intervention, delivering food and extracting the vulnerable population would have been impossible. This marks a significant escalation in her diplomatic role, following a back-channel revelation with President Vladimir Putin last year.
The city, located on the southern bank of the Dnipro River in the Kherson region, has seen its population plummet from roughly 24,000 pre-invasion to approximately 2,000 today. Former residents told AFP earlier this month that those remaining are caught in crossfire, facing acute shortages of medication and food. Trump stated that civilian leaders from both nations would visit the devastated area to assess specific aid needs and coordinate transportation for evacuees, some of whom may choose to go to Russia and others to Ukraine.
Her office said an unidentified "impartial American media organization" would accompany ground teams to document the process and ensure residents' wishes are respected. This announcement arrives as President Donald Trump intensifies efforts to end the war, allegedly pivoting strategy toward Putin and away from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Trump, 56, has recently increased her public profile, launching initiatives on foster children and online harassment, and releasing a documentary funded by Amazon.
The next critical step is the physical implementation of the ceasefire on October 29. Diplomatic observers are watching to see if the promised joint visit by Russian and Ukrainian civilian leaders materializes and whether the unidentified media organization provides verifiable documentation of the aid distribution.
