Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Monday that the 65‑year‑old independent member of Parliament was deliberately struck by a car outside her Wangaratta office, resulting in critical injuries.
Acting Superintendent Ashley Mason confirmed that the driver, a 43‑year‑old male, was detained by civilians before police secured his arrest and discovered a knife in his vehicle.
Albanese added that the attack was not an accident, citing the presence of a weapon and the deliberate nature of the incident, and that the counter‑terrorism squad has been activated.
Haines, who entered Parliament in 2019 after a career as a nurse and midwife, has been recognised for championing climate action and political transparency. Her family thanked bystanders and medical staff for swift assistance.
The Australian Federal Police noted a rising trend of threats against politicians and announced a dedicated investigation team last year. They will now focus on the motive behind the attack, which remains unknown.
A police spokesperson said the driver will face charges under the Road Traffic Act and assault statutes, and that the case is being processed by the Metropolitan Police Court.
