The body of former Rwandan sergeant major Robert Kabera was discovered Saturday in a dense bush in the Kamengo area of Mpigi district, just outside Kampala, Uganda. Residents and Kabera’s brother identified the remains, but the head remains missing.
Kabera fled Rwanda in 2020 after the military launched an inquiry into allegations of unlawful sexual contact and threats of persecution. He was a well‑known figure in the army, performing with the Army Jazz Band, and later built a YouTube channel, Major Robert TV, that drew over 140,000 followers.
The channel’s commentary, critical of President Paul Kagame’s regime, earned him both a following among some Rwandans and the ire of officials. In Uganda, police spokesperson Rusoke Kituuma said investigators noted Kabera’s military background but have yet to establish a motive. “We will establish this in the course of investigations,” Kituuma told reporters.
Rwanda’s government has yet to comment on the death, while critics point to a pattern of repression against dissenters and former officers who have fled the country. The case adds to a growing list of ex‑military personnel who have disappeared or been killed abroad.
Uganda’s National Police will continue the probe, seeking the missing head and any evidence of foul play. A preliminary report is expected in the coming weeks, and diplomatic contacts between the two governments may intensify as the investigation progresses.
